John Ross, Founder, Director

John Ross brings over 25 years of experience in innovative animal rescue and shelter management. A leader in both direct care and systems-level reform, John has built and led successful rescue programs, developed lifesaving partnerships, and advocated for policy changes to address the root causes of pet overpopulation.

As the founder of Fair Pet Foundation, he combines hands-on expertise with a visionary approach to creating enforceable laws that protect animals, hold bad actors accountable, and increase adoption outcomes nationwide. John’s work bridges the gap between sheltering and legislation — always focused on practical, compassionate solutions.

Carolyn Coradeschi, VP

With over 30 years of leadership in sales, strategic partnerships, and team development, Carolyn Coradeschi brings a powerhouse blend of business acumen and heartfelt advocacy to FairPetFoundation.org. A seasoned executive and top-performing sales leader, she has built and led high-performing teams, cultivated major partnerships, and driven revenue growth across startups, healthcare, and mission-driven organizations.

A lifelong animal advocate and devoted rescue dog owner—most recently, of Great Danes, Carolyn now channels her expertise into advancing legislation that targets unregulated puppy sales online. Her work focuses on holding social media and classified ad platforms like Craigslist and Facebook accountable for enabling anonymous backyard breeding operations. This legislation aims to bring transparency and oversight to stop illegal sellers from exploiting animals and deceiving the public.

At FairPetFoundation.org, Carolyn leads the development of strategic alliances and donor relationships that power real change—mobilizing lawmakers, celebrities, and communities around a shared mission: ending the exploitation of animals for profit.

Now, she is enthusiastic about channeling her diverse expertise and unwavering commitment to animal welfare as she contributes to the Fair Pet Foundation. Her primary objective is to significantly advance the cause of ensuring safety, dignity, and a better quality of life for all pets

When she’s not volunteering with cats and dogs, you can find her cheering on the Lakers, browsing through record stores, or obeying the demands of her own very vocal husky.

In 2008, she and her daughter, actress Katherine Heigl, established the foundation to honor her late son, Jason, who was a lifelong animal lover. The organization is guided by Jason’s compassionate spirit and aims to eliminate the needless suffering inflicted on animals due to human indifference and ignorance.

Through the Jason Debus Heigl Foundation, Nancy Heigl focuses on several initiatives to support animals in need. The foundation works to address the pet overpopulation crisis by funding spay and neuter programs, assists with the rescue and relocation of animals from high-kill shelters, and provides financial support for medical care for vulnerable shelter pets. Additionally, the foundation campaigns to raise public awareness about the horrors of puppy mills and dog fighting.

📣 Join the Fair Pet Foundation Board of Advisors

The Fair Pet Foundation is building a dedicated Board of Advisors to support our mission: advancing fair, enforceable laws that protect animals, stop unethical breeding practices, and promote shelter adoption — while supporting the rescue and rehoming of vulnerable pets across the country.

We’re seeking compassionate, strategic individuals who bring expertise in one or more of the following areas:

  • Animal welfare or veterinary care
  • Nonprofit leadership or fundraising
  • Legal, legislative, or regulatory policy
  • Public relations, media, or digital campaigns
  • Finance, philanthropy, or grant development
  • Technology, volunteer management, or community organizing

Why Join Us?

As an advisor, you’ll provide insight and guidance that helps shape the future of companion animal protection and reform. Your role is non-governing and flexible, making it ideal for professionals who want to contribute their expertise and expand their impact — without the time commitment of a voting board.

Together, we are building enforceable solutions to end anonymous online pet sales, shut down backyard breeders, and ensure every pet has a fair chance.

Geraldine Gilliland

A native of Belfast, Northern Ireland, Geraldine Gilliland is a self-made woman—chef, cookbook author and owner of the popular Santa Monica restaurant Lula Cocina Mexicana. But Gilliland has another major passion in her life besides food: rescuing dogs under the umbrella of the nonprofit Chiquita’s Friends, which she founded in 2011.

Chiquita’s Friends’ stated mission is to “rescue, provide sanctuary and veterinarian care, and adopt out to suitable homes, senior, special needs, and neglected canines through our own hands-on efforts as well as offering financial support to other tax-exempt organizations with similar goals.”

Over the past 25 years, Gilliland’s organization has taken in a countless number of dogs. At first, all the rescued canines lived on her 250-acre Rancho Chiquita just outside Malibu city limits—a property that also includes her home and a wedding/event venue. When the Rancho’s dog facilities became filled to capacity, she looked to expand.

Her first expansion took place on the 12-acre Meade Canine Rescue near Atascadero. In a kind of joint venture with that group, Gilliland converted an old barn into additional facilities.

Setting her sights back in Malibu, she purchased an old ranch near Cornell Road and Kanan in 2017, which she named Chiquita’s Friends—Cornell Sanctuary. The buildings and grounds needed a lot of work and just as construction work was completed, including the renovation of the caretaker’s cottage, the Woolsey Fire destroyed everything. The 26 dogs, plus cats and assorted farm animals there were all evacuated safely.

In order to rebuild and also fund other projects, Gilliland made the decision several months later to sell off a second popular restaurant she owned in Santa Monica—Finn McCool’s Irish Pub.

Chiquita’s Friends recently sponsored a free spay/neuter clinic in an impoverished neighborhood in Ensenada, Mexico, where owners brought over 300 pets. She plans to return for a similar program in Tijuana for street dogs in April.
